Travel by plane from Newcastle airport

Newcastle is our closest airport (only 45 minutes away). Virgin Australia and Jetstar are major airlines that both operate flights to Newcastle airport. The airport is well serviced with hire cars, bus transfers, private transfers, coffee shops and ample parking. Once at the airport, there are a range of options for transfers to Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens:

  • By far the easiest and most convenient way to get from Newcastle Airport to Hawks Nest or Tea Gardens is via private transfer (see listings under Hire Car / Taxi).

  • Hunter Valley Buses (CDC NSW brand) operate services from Newcastle Airport to the Newcastle Interchange where you can get a connecting Busways service.  

  • Hunter Valley Buses operate services from Newcastle Airport into Raymond Terrace. You will need to change onto a Busways coach service that will take you into Hawks Nest / Tea Gardens. The distance from Hunter valley Buses to Busways is a five minute walk.

  • Alternatively, rental cars are available at the airport.

Travel by plane from Taree airport

Regional Express Airlines (Rex) flies to Taree (north of Hawks Nest / Tea Gardens). From Taree airport you need to make your way (usually via taxi) to Taree train station where you will transfer to a Busways coach service. The Busways coach service leaves from Taree and can drop you in either Tea Gardens / Hawks Nest.

An alternative coach service (departing from Taree Station) is available but it does NOT go into Hawks Nest or Tea Gardens. This service stops at The Great Aussie Bush Camp (The Rock on the Pacific Highway). From The Rock you can get a private transfer into town (see listings under Hire Car / Taxi).

    • 1. The Singing Bridge built over the Myall River between Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest ‘sings’ when there is a strong south-west wind.

    • 2. The Jean Shaw Koala Reserve is located at the Northeast of the Singing Bridge. Perhaps the Koalas cross the bridge to visit their families for a picnic.

    • 3. Former Prime Minister John Howard and his family would come to Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest for holidays.

    • 4. Public transport to Tea Gardens is available daily.

    • 5. Opinion is divided on where Tea Gardens got its name from – either the unsuccessful attempt to grow tea on 500,000 acres by the Australian Agricultural Company in 1826, or, the concentration of tea-trees along the Myall River.

    • 6. Tea tree oil is commonly used to treat insect bites due to its antibacterial properties.

    • 7. You can enjoy a picnic and views over Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest from the Lions Park Lookout on Tea Gardens Road (Myall Way).

    • 8. The local Worimi people welcomed five shipwrecked convicts in 1790 who they believed were ancestors returning from the dead (explains their pale skin). They were the first Europeans to arrive in the area.
